Iran executes ex-defense ministry official on charges of spying for US

Iran executed a former contract employee for the aerospace organization of the defense ministry on charges of spying for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.

Jalal Hajizavar, who left his post in the aerospace organization nine years ago, was found guilty in the military court after Iranian investigators found incriminating documents and spying materials in his home, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting news agency on Saturday.

The IRIB agency said Hajizavar was executed at Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj west of Tehran, the country’s capital. Further details were not immediately provided.

This execution comes rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran. President Trump’s announced that he is considering sanctions on Tehran after a U.S. drone was shot down by Iran. He ordered military strikes against Iran Thursday night, but called it off in the final minutes.
