More than 130 students unenrolled from Virginia Tech due to vaccination mandate

Virginia Tech announced that 134 students were unenrolled from the school after failing to produce documentation that they received the coronavirus vaccine.

The students who did not produce the necessary documentation did not receive medical or religious exemptions from getting vaccinated, violating the school’s vaccine mandate for staff and students, according to the school’s website.

“Of the approximately 37,000 students enrolled at Virginia Tech, 134 students were not in compliance with the COVID-19 vaccination requirement, meaning that they did not submit vaccination documentation or receive a medical or religious exemption,” according to Virginia Tech’s FAQ page. “These students have been disenrolled.”

With a campus size of 37,000 students, 94% of the student population had reportedly received the vaccine as of late August, while 3% to 4% had received some sort of exemption. Only 1% to 2% were not vaccinated for separate reasons.

“A very common example of that is our international students, where vaccine availability was simply not available to them,” said Mark Owczarski, Virginia Tech’s associate vice president for university relations.

It is unclear if any of the 134 students were not planning on returning to campus for reasons other than the vaccine mandate, school officials said.

Faculty and other university employees have until Oct. 1 to get vaccinated or receive an exemption. Some 82% are already vaccinated.
