O’s hoping Machado doesn’t come up short

Finally, Miguel Tejada‘s replacement. Maybe. Eventually. Who knows?

And by Tejada’s replacement, we mean the guy who played shortstop in Baltimore from 2004 to 2007 and not the guy currently playing third. In drafting Manny Machado third overall Monday night, the O’s possibly have their shortstop of the future.

And there’s some debate about whether Machado is better suited down the road for third base. At 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, he still has to fill out his frame, and that could prompt a position switch. The quick scouting report, according to the draft blogs: quick hands, good footwork, excellent bat speed. But he’s only a high school senior; it’ll take time. In the meantime, the Orioles can also see whether last year’s second-round pick Mychal Givens can handle shortstop. Aside from these two, there’s little else.

The Orioles have many problems. They now hope shortstop, at least in a couple years, isn’t one of them.
