The top Democrat in the 2020 presidential field is finding it difficult to remain significant in the wall-to-wall media coverage dominating the coronavirus pandemic.
Former Vice President Joe Biden has had a difficult time resonating with the American public who, according to a Yahoo/YouGov poll, voted him the politician they have heard from the least since Trump declared a national emergency on March 12.
The poll gauged whether people in the United States had heard “a lot” about a number of politicians, including high-profile Democrats such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The poll found that 61% of people have heard “a lot” from Trump, with only 17% saying the same for Biden. Cuomo, Vice President Mike Pence, and Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci earned the most votes, according to the data. The pollsters also asked people how they rated the performance of each politician, with respondents giving Trump a 25% approval rating while Biden only received 10%.
Biden, who promised shadow press conferences to highlight how he and President Trump would handle the pandemic differently, has seen coverage of his few appearances on major networks hone in on the former senator’s growing list of gaffes. On Saturday, Fox News host Tucker Carlson said insiders had told him that Biden won’t make it to the general election in November.
On Monday, Cuomo’s chances to become the next president surged from 250-to-1 to 25-to-1, strengthened by the Democrat’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic in New York state. In legal British betting markets that track the 2020 presidential election, those odds hypothetically place Cuomo in third place for the presidency, behind only Biden and Trump.
