Schaefer’s funeral scheduled in Balt. next week

Former Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer’s funeral will be held next week at Old St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Baltimore.

The two-term governor and four-term Baltimore mayor was a member of the church — the closest Episcopal house of worship to City Hall — according to a spokeswoman for the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. Schaefer served as both mayor of Baltimore and a member of the City Council.

The Rev. Mark Stanley will officiate at the funeral at 11 a.m. April 27.

The church seats roughly 850 people, and there will be overflow viewing at a site next door.

Tuesday morning, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake declared a moment of silence at 9 a.m. and state and city flags were lowered to half-staff.

Schaefer, who is credited with the revitalization of Baltimore, died Monday evening at age 89 after being hospitalized earlier this month with pneumonia.
