‘Anti-science’: GOP representatives demand Pelosi rescind Capitol mask mandate

In a Friday press release, Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona announced that he, along with several other House Republicans, sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi demanding she “immediately rescind the draconian mask mandate” and reopen the Capitol to the public.

“The House’s mandates are anti-science, ineffective, and tyrannical, and they must end now,” the letter read. “The American people are returning to normal, and the House of Representatives should too.”

“The Capitol belongs to the American people, and their right to come before Congress is not contingent on wearing a mask. No more excuses, reopen the Capitol and rescind the mandates so that we can return to normal,” Biggs said in the press release.

The letter was signed by 29 other House Republicans, including Reps. Scott Perry, Madison Cawthorn, Paul Gosar, Morgan Griffith, Nancy Mace, Scott Franklin, Tom McClintock, Tom Tiffany, Bob Good, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Randy Weber, Barry Loudermilk, Mike Carey, Bob Gibbs, Rick Crawford, Brian Babin, Chip Roy, Mo Brooks, Ralph Norman, Brian Mast, Jody Hice, Bill Posey, Andy Harris, Matt Rosendale, Michael Cloud, Andrew Clyde, Ted Budd, Louie Gohmert, and Mary Miller.

“States like California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Nevada, New York, and Rhode Island have lifted mask mandates in recent weeks. Even Washington D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser lifted her ridiculous vaccine mandate and announced the mask mandate will soon follow,” the letter continued.

A representative for Pelosi told the Washington Examiner that “COVID posture decisions are up to the Office of Attending Physician. Reopening of the Capitol is up the House and Senate Sergeants at Arms in consultation with the Office of Attending Physician.”

The Office of Attending Physician did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.

The House chamber’s mask mandate was lifted in June, which was met with cheers from Republican representatives. However, their joy didn’t last long. In late July, the mandate was reinstated, and the Capitol Police were advised to arrest maskless staff and visitors.

Lawmakers were warned of possible fines for ignoring the guidance.
