Kim Jong Un’s demeanor ahead of the summit between himself and President Trump has put the United States on the defensive due to a great public relations campaign, Sen. Bob Corker said Sunday.
Corker said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Kim’s willingness to meet with the Americans and to give up testing on his nuclear weapons — at least temporarily — is surprising.
“You can easily reverse that and all of us know that. But again, I think he is handling himself well to begin the meetings in a way that almost put the United States on the defensive,” Corker said.
Trump tweeted Sunday morning touting North Korea agreeing to denuclearize before backing off that statement in a subsequent tweet.
Corker urged Trump and other negotiators to beware of Kim’s promises.
“This is a great public relations effort by Kim Jong Un, I think people recognize that. I think everyone within the administration and Congress approaches this with skepticism and caution. Yet, I’m glad the two leaders are talking and — we’ll see what happens,” he said.
