Though Leonardo da Vinci’s main artistic medium was paint, he is known to have made bronze sculptures of horses.

“The Budapest Horse” relates an investigation by the National Gallery of Art’s Renaissance Bronze Research Project and the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, Hungary, seeking evidence to support or refute the attribution of “The Rearing Horse and Mounted Warrior” to da Vinci — an attribution first postulated in 1916.

Bronzes from collections in Milan, Italy; Limerick, Ireland; and New York City join pieces from Budapest and D.C. in this intimate look at a mystery half a millennium old.
