Getting to NFL by way of UFL?

Colt Brennan wants another shot at the NFL. To get it, however, he has to make detour.

The former Redskins quarterback and cult figure will play for Hartford in the United Football League. His coach? Jerry Glanville, who was the defensive coordinator at the University of Hawaii for two years with Brennan.

But this isn’t about reunions. It’s about getting another chance. After the Redskins cut him last summer, Brennan played for Oakland until the Raiders released him a few weeks later. Then on Nov. 19, Brennan and his girlfriend were involved in a car accident that left him with broken bones and a serious head injury that left him in a sedated coma for several days. But Brennan, a sixth-round pick in 2008, has recovered to the point he can play football again.

“Naturally, after the accident, I’ve been making phone calls and doing as much work as possible to figure out the best path to start over,” Brennan told the UFL’s website. “I still want to play football. Obviously, I’d love to play in the NFL, and I’ve had a lot of adversity with four surgeries. I was looking into Canada. I was looking into the NFL, and then the UFL became a real great opportunity for what they’ve done the last two years.”

He’ll compete with another former NFL passer, Josh McCown, for playing time. McCown was the UFL’s top-rated passer in 2010.

“It’s a great opportunity for guys to have a chance to play at a high level of competition and keep their NFL dreams alive,” Brennan said. “I’m excited to play football again.”
