Saudi Arabia announces arrests of 93 terror suspects

Saudi Arabia has arrested 93 people accused of plotting terror attacks since December, the nation’s Interior Ministry said Tuesday.

The suspects — who were nearly all Saudi citizens — are accused of recruiting and training new members, testing explosives, gathering firearms and plotting to attack residential areas and security facilities, including the U.S. embassy, according to a statement. The suspects, who were arrested in six groups, were mostly tied to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

One of the suspects is a woman, the statement said.

At this time, there is no known reason why Saudi Arabia released news of the 93 arrests when it did, given that no names or information about how or when the suspects would be tried were released.

Saudi Arabia is part of a U.S.-led coalition conducting airstrikes against the Islamic State. The Saudis are also leading an Arab coalition carrying out airstrikes in Yemen.
