An Argentinian television station is using Donald Trump to promote the Copa America soccer tournament. But not in a good way.
The ad instead uses his immigration rhetoric to promote the country’s national soccer team.
The 71-second ad begins by introducing Trump as a businessman. “Our country is in serious trouble. We’re having people coming in through the border that are not people that we want,” Trump says at a rally, while Argentina’s national soccer team is seen exiting a plane.
“Thousands of people are coming through the border — hundreds of thousands — and they’re unchecked,” Trump says while Argentinians chant and cheer for their soccer team. “And then they’re being sent all over the United States.”
The cities of Chicago, Seattle, Houston and Los Angeles, which are set to host Copa America games, then flash on screen.
“We don’t even know where these people are all coming from. They’re coming from all over, they’re coming from South America,” Trump says, as specific South American soccer players — Argentine star Lio Messi, for example — are shown on the pitch, shooting and scoring goals. “These are not the nice, sweet little people that you think, OK?”
Trump then pushes: “We need to build a wall.”
“I would build a great wall,” Trump says as more soccer highlights play, including a player breaking through a wall of defenders to score. “They are totally taking advantage of us, and that’s what’s happening whether you like it or not.”
The video ends with Spanish text reading: “La verdad, lo mejor que pueden hacer es no dejarnos entrar” — “It’s the truth, the best they can do is not let us in.”
