Dallas shooter was former soldier, Afghanistan vet

Dallas shooter Micah Xavier Johnson was a private first class in the U.S. Army Reserve and served a tour of duty in Afghanistan, according to his service record released Friday by the Army.

Police named Johnson as the shooter responsible for killing five police officers and wounded seven more, along with two civilians in Dallas on Thursday. He was killed at the scene.

Johnson served in the Army Reserve from March 2009 to April 2015, and was activated and deployed to Afghanistan from November 2013 to July of 2014 with the 420th Engineer Brigade.

His job was listed as “Carpentry and Masonry Specialist,” but all soldiers receive firearms training.

His service record as released by the Army shows the kind of routine medals and awards consistent with a typical tour of duty. His home is listed as Mesquite, Texas, and he attained the rank of private first class in May 2010.
