Injury is a severe blow to the already-thin Terrapins
A broken bone in his left foot will sideline Maryland guard Pe’Shon Howard for 10-12 weeks, the school announced on Thursday morning. The loss of the sophomore is a significant blow to a team that first-year coach Mark Turgeon said – heading into preseason practice last month — could afford few injuries. Maryland now is down to seven scholarship players.
“I feel bad for Pe’Shon,” Turgeon said in a statement. “He worked so hard and had a great summer and early fall. He’s been practicing and playing well for us. Hopefully, we’ll get a lot better by the time Pe’Shon joins the team later this year.”
The 6-foot-3 Howard, who averaged 5.4 points and 3.2 assists last year, was a likely starter at point guard. His absence will likely require sophomore Terrell Stoglin to return to the point. Turgeon had said as preseason opened that he wanted Stoglin to play more off the ball this year.
Sean Mosley, a 6-4 senior, and freshman Nick Faust, a 6-6 freshman, are the other scholarship guards. Mosley is another point guard option, though it is not his best position. Howard’s injury also could mean more playing time for slowly-developing 6-5 sophomore wing Mychal Parker.
