Aerial footage of Kenosha, Wisconsin, shows the damage rioters caused the city, and officials said there has been nearly $2 million in damages to government property.
Rioters took to the streets of Kenosha following the police shooting of Jacob Blake on Aug. 23. The Daily Mail published a video on Tuesday showing burned buildings and destroyed businesses left in the protesters’ wake.
City officials explained this week that rioters caused nearly $2 million in damages to government property.
“Right now … between lost equipment, lost streetlights, lost traffic signals, and miscellaneous sign damage, we’re estimating a cost of approximately $1.9 million,” said Kenosha Public Works Director Shelly Billingsley.
Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian said this weekend that he asked Gov. Tony Evers for $30 million “to help the city of Kenosha rebuild and heal after the week of violence and damage experienced particularly in the downtown, uptown, and surrounding areas of the city.”
“Kenosha is a safe community with hardworking individuals who are mourning and facing immense tragedy and devastation,” Antaramian said Sunday in a press release. “We’re asking the state and community partners to help rebuild what was lost and to invest in programs and training for our young people.”
President Trump is visiting the city on Tuesday, where he will meet with business owners and see the damage.
“We must strictly and fully enforce our law and have no tolerance for anarchy and no tolerance, zero, for violence,” Trump said during a press conference on Monday. “Anyone who breaks the law should be arrested, prosecuted, and punished.”
