Summer has come to RFK

Lot 8 is filling up rapidly with happy tailgaters while I’m getting ready to work, there’s no refreshing breeze off the Anacostia River, and there’s no air conditioning in the steamy RFK Stadium press box.

Ah, summer.

That also means its time for the silly season of soccer exhibitions, so bring on AC Milan vs. D.C. United. Then, later this summer, how about another huge club – and by huge, I mean huge financial troubles – Portsmouth FC. Fresh off finishing last in the English Premier League and going into administration, the club says it will embark on its first transatlantic tour since 1951 in July, a trip that will conclude in Washington with a match against D.C. United on July 24. Not sure that will have the same appeal as tonight’s match, but only Ronaldinho can bring in DC sports VIPs like Colt Brennan and Tomas Fleischmann.

I have to wonder, too, will any of the 23-player U.S. roster for the World Cup, including Robbie Findley – for real – might slide on over to RFK when they arrive from Hartford. (If not, they can catch the match live on Comcast SportsNet.) That group will be here for the White House visit tomorrow before heading to Philadelphia. Be sure to check out U.S. head coach Bob Bradley‘s comments on the roster and my Cheers & Jeers take on Findley and the U.S. forwards not named Jozy Altidore, which will also be in tomorrow’s print edition.

Speaking of U.S. vs. Turkey: If you’re not headed to Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday afternoon, check out a charity match at RFK’s auxiliary field between The Nicole Megaloudis Foundation and DC Knights Street Soccer Club.
