TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Rick Scott is making a concentrated push to reach out to Hispanic voters in what will likely be a tight re-election campaign.
But that push is leading Scott to abandon the hard line he took four years ago against illegal immigration.
Scott on Monday signed into law a bill that guarantees in-state tuition rates to high school students living in the country illegally.
Scott opposed the idea in 2011, but polls show Hispanic voters overwhelmingly behind the move.
The Republican governor has taken a series of steps to ramp up his Hispanic outreach.
Scott just last week launched a Spanish radio ad, and he aired a television ad in late April.
Democrats have called Scott’s latest actions a “deathbed conversion” meant to fool voters about his record.
