MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Democratic state senator blasted a Republican colleague for threatening to reconsider a grant for a Wisconsin Chippewa tribe after the band announced it dramatically increased its walleye spearfishing goals, saying he has an “1800s mentality.”
The state’s six Chippewa tribes announced earlier this month they planned to spear nearly 60,000 walleye across northern Wisconsin lakes this spring, about 5,300 more than last year. State wildlife officials had to scale back walleye bag limits for non-tribal anglers to protect the fishery, sparking fears that tourism will suffer and further fraying the state’s relationship with the Chippewa.
