Gebo is a music doctorate student at Catholic University of America and a member OF The Pershing’s Own, a ceremonial band in the United States Army Band. He played the trumpet earlier this month on “The Tonight Show” for the song “Unsung Hero,” with Julia Fordham and Paul Reiser. What was it like performing on the “Tonight Show?”
It was really an amazing experience to be a part of. It was an honor to stand there in uniform with them doing this song on national television as a tribute to the families of those that are serving our country and make sacrifices day in and day out for us.
What do you think of the song?
Since I’ve heard it I’ve shared it with a lot of my friends and family and fellow military soldiers and just people that I work with. It’s kind of been spreading slowly, and if this can reach people and be comforting and meaningful to them, then I’m even more thrilled to be a part of the project.
What do you enjoy about music?
I am thrilled that to be able to do something that I have such a love and a passion for and I get to do it every day. Being in the Army band is even better because not only do I get to perform, which I love doing, I get to share my talents in a meaningful way. Playing taps at a funeral is a really somber and special moment to families that are at the funeral.
How have you combined your passion for music and the military?
I think the same way of finding this unit within the military that seeks out highly trained musicians… I’m working with some of the best musicians in the country because that’s what this band draws, so it’s kind of a plus on both ends.
