WATCH: MSNBC host Ari Melber clashes with Trump aide Peter Navarro over 2020 ‘coup’ attempt

MSNBC host Ari Melber sparred with former White House adviser Peter Navarro about Trumpian efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 election that culminated in the Capitol riot early last year.

The interview Tuesday evening offered the Trump ally a rare opportunity to argue on the left-leaning network that widespread fraud and irregularities warranted a bid to stop the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory. The exchange also gave Melber the chance to press Navarro on whether the effort was tantamount to subverting democracy.

Navarro discussed a plan he dubbed the “Green Bay Sweep” to enlist members of Congress and put pressure on then-Vice President Mike Pence to stall the Jan. 6 certification and send electoral votes back to several battleground states where GOP-led legislatures could try to overturn the results. Melber shot back, saying that after the outcome was established by “independent” secretaries of state as well as the voters and legal challenges up to the Supreme Court went nowhere, the losing Republicans sought to use their power to reverse the outcome that favored the Democrats.

JAN. 6 COMMITTEE ASKS SEAN HANNITY TO COOPERATE WITH INVESTIGATION

“Do you realize you are describing a coup?” Melber asked.

Navarro fought back, saying, “No, I totally reject many of your premises there.” Navarro also castigated the secretaries of state in Michigan and Pennsylvania, whom he said were found to have broken the law and were put in power by liberal billionaire George Soros “for the express purpose of shifting the playing field,” and insisted former President Donald Trump and his allies were abiding by the Constitution and the rules of the Senate to get a recount in battleground states where they claimed there was foul play.

The interview was the latest Navarro has done during a media blitz with the one-year anniversary of the Capitol riot coming up this week.

Navarro spoke with the Washington Examiner last week and asserted that he would not cooperate with the House select committee investigating the siege of Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, though he claims he has evidence that exonerates Trump.

“Their narrative is that Trump instigated the violence. My fact-based claim is that the last thing Trump, Bannon, or [I] wanted that day was violence because we needed peace and calm on Capitol Hill to implement [the] Green Bay Sweep,” Navarro said. “The only reason why we weren’t able to execute the strategy was because of that violence.”
