Update  2:40 p.m. The Federal Center SW station reopened at 2:24 p.m., according to Metro.

A column on the station platform, which contains electrical wiring, had been the source of the smoke, said Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel.

No one was reported injured and trains should be running
normal service through the station, all in time for the evening commute.

The Federal Center SW Metrorail station has been closed due to smoke in the station, according to Metro.

The Orange and Blue Line station was evacuated at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday after the smoke was spotted, though it was not clear what was causing it, said spokesman Reggie Woodruff. The station was shut down to all passengers, but trains were allowed to pass through without stopping.

As of 1:50 p.m. the station remained closed as police and firefighters were trying to find the source of the smoke. D.C. Fire and EMS reported that a light fixture may have been to blame.

It was not immediately clear when the station could reopen, Woodruff said. The transit agency has called in shuttle buses for the displaced passengers. But riders should expect delays.
