PHILADELPHIA — Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders supporters gathered at the gates of the Democratic convention with a message for the party’s leadership: they won’t vote for Hillary Clinton in November.
“Hell no DNC, we won’t vote for Hillary!” chanted the protesters outside the Wells Fargo Center.
Hundreds of Sanders supporters protested across Philadelphia on Friday, including near Philadelphia City Hall and the site of the convention.
While many of Sanders supporters expressed different reasons for why they despised Clinton, their unifying complaint appeared to be that Clinton did not win the election fairly.
“It has not been fair and square,” said Bruce Eichbauer, a Sanders supporter from Nashville, Tenn. “Hillary Clinton doesn’t know how to do anything fair and square.”
Eichabauer, who carried a sign labeling the Clintons “super predators” continued, “They nominate Hillary, they’ve lost to Trump and they can’t blame us. Every poll, three new polls out today, very reputable national news, all of them losing to Trump. Any poll you see with Bernie and Trump, Bernie kicks ass.”
David Barrows, a Sanders supporter, dressed in a Shakespearean Clinton costume and carried a sign reading “Lady MacDeath” to let Democrats know he’s a “Never Hillary” voter.

“The media told everybody that oh Bernie doesn’t have a chance — he did have a chance,” Barrows said wearing a Clinton mask and dress. “If people just hadn’t fallen for that line he would’ve won because he’s obviously far brighter than she.”
Asked who Sanders supporters would vote for if not Clinton in November, some Sanders fans said they would write-in Sanders, including Eichbauer. Others expressed a willingness to vote for Jill Stein, the Green Party’s presumptive nominee.
Kevin, a Sanders supporter from Chicago who said he would vote for Stein in November, verbally accosted a Clinton supporter who argued that his vote would benefit Donald Trump. Kevin shouted “F—k Trump” repeatedly and noted that he would vote against Clinton because of her connections to Wall Street.

Despite the rambunctious nature of the demonstrations and temperatures approaching 100 degrees, the hundreds of protesters in Philadelphia remained non-violent. Whether Sanders supporters keep their cool as the week goes on remains to be seen.
