Let’s be honest. Brett Favre shouldn’t be playing this weekend against the Redskins. He is 41 years old and has 20 years of NFL wear-and-tear on his fading body, including fractures in his heel and ankle. Favre has a league-worst 17 interceptions and an abysmal 69.8 passer rating.
Is Tarvaris Jackson any good? No. We’ve seen enough of him to know that. So a change in head coaches this week from Brad Childress to Leslie Frazier isn’t going to send Favre to the bench. But it should.
“How is [Favre] giving you the best chance of winning? You’re 3-7 with this guy,” NBC football analyst Rodney Harrison said. “He’s thrown [17] interceptions. How does that give you a better chance to win?”
It doesn’t. The hope is Jackson being humbled enough by his own year-and-a-half on the bench that he would be content to manage the game and let running back Adrian Peterson shoulder the load. A player such as Favre, whose extraordinary talent will carry him to the Hall of Fame, isn’t capable of stepping back.
