Marjorie Taylor Greene calls Trump ‘leader’ of GOP after ‘perfect phone call’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called former President Donald Trump the “leader of the Republican Party” after he helped secure conservative holdouts at a critical moment in the House speaker race.

“President Trump is the leader of the Republican Party,” wrote the Georgia Republican on social media.

As the tight election played out on the House floor Friday night, Greene was seen holding up her cellphone to Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT), one of the opponents to McCarthy’s bid for speaker. The phone screen read read “DT,” which she later confirmed was the former president on the line.

“It was the perfect phone call,” Greene tweeted the photo of her holding up a cellphone to Rosendale.

The “perfect phone call” was how Trump described his controversial phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which fueled House Democrats’ 2019 impeachment inquiry.

On the final vote and 15th round, Rep. Rosendale voted “present” after McCarthy already had enough votes to win. During the 14th round of voting, Rosendale had yelled out the name of Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and was among the remaining Republican holdouts.

The newly elected speaker gave credit to Trump for helping him get past the finish line.

“I do want to especially thank President Trump,” McCarthy told reporters Saturday morning. “I don’t think anybody should doubt his influence.”

“And he really was — I was just talking to him tonight — helping get those final votes,” the California Republican added. “And what he’s really saying really for the party and the country, that we have to come together. We have to focus on the economy,” he continued. “We’ve got to focus, make our border secure. We’ve got so much work to do, and he was a great influence to make that all happen. So, thank you, President Trump.”
