District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser will not attend the grand opening of Donald Trump’s newest luxury hotel in downtown Washington on Wednesday because the event is “too political.”

The first-term Democratic mayor’s staff told NBC-4 that going to the event “may be too political this close to the election.”
However, Bowser has been busy on the road campaigning for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her running mate Sen. Tim Kaine. Bowser traveled to Florida on Monday to campaign with Kaine in the battleground state.

Bowser spoke out against the billionaire businessman last month for remarks he made about unsafe inner cities, including Washington.
“Smh at DT who comes to DC for profit on the 1 hand, badmouths it on the other. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but here are the facts,” Bowser had tweeted. “Smh” is a millennial acronym for “shaking my head.”
The mayor’s office did not return a request for additional comment.
