Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford says “on principle” he is opposed to sending money to Iran, a country he called a prime exporter of malign influence.
Appearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday, Dunford was questioned by Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., about the $1.7 billion the United States sent to Iran to settle a decades old dispute at the same time Iran released three American prisoners.
Dunford said he was not part of the decision, and that in the normal course of events that would not be in his lane.
“I just don’t know the details of the agreement made with Iran and what the nature of that money was. On principle, I would prefer that we not provide additional resources to Iran,” Dunford said. “I’m under no illusion of what Iran is intending to do.”
