Trump: Debt makes Clinton’s green energy plan impossible

Donald Trump said Monday that Hillary Clinton’s plans to build a new green energy economy can never be implemented because the country is in too much debt to pay for the infrastructure improvements she wants.

Clinton said at the debate at Hofstra University in New York that if she wins the White House, she would create millions of new jobs by making “investments” in green energy.

“Donald thinks that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese,” she said. “I think it’s real … and I think it’s important that we grip this and deal with it, both at home and abroad. And here’s what we can do, we can deploy a half a billion more solar panels.”

“We can have enough clean energy to power every home,” she added. “We can build a new modern electric grid. That’s a lot of jobs. That’s a lot of new economic activity.”

But Trump said her dreams can’t be achieved because the U.S. government can’t afford it.

“You can’t do what you’re looking to do with $20 trillion in debt,” he said. “The Obama administration from the time they’ve come in is over 230 years worth of debt, and he’s topped it, he’s doubled it in the course of almost eight years, seven-and-a-half years to be semi-exact.”

The national debt exceeded $19.5 trillion for the first time last month, and is expected to approach $20 trillion by the time Obama leaves office.
