Mexican drug lord injured but escapes

Notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was closely pursued by authorities, but again avoided capture, the Mexican government announced late Friday.

Guzman is believed to have sustained injuries to the face and a leg, and the pursuit transpired in the mountains of Northwest Mexico, the Associated Press reports.

Segments of northwest Mexico, some close to the United States border, are rife with drug violence, populated by various criminal elements with whom Guzman could be seeking shelter, and laden with difficult, mountainous terrain.

Guzman could be in Sinaloa, where he headed up his famous cartel by the same name, and could still. Mexico did not specify exactly where in the northwest the operation occurred.

His escape from Mexican prison made headlines across the globe earlier this year, and before his incarceration, he was thought to be, at the time of his capture in 2014, the wealthiest drug trafficker in the world, even ranked in Forbes. Guzman was incarcerated once before, but escaped that time as well.
