Steny Hoyer: Republicans are pushing balanced budget measure because they’re ‘worried’ about midterms

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., criticized Republicans Tuesday for pushing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution after supporting policies that explode the deficit.

The House is expected to vote on a measure this week that would prohibit Congress from spending more than it takes in each year. Republicans are also considering pushing through a rescission resolution that would allow cuts to domestic spending that were recently passed in the omnibus.

Republicans are attempting to convince voters that they care about the deficit, Hoyer said.

“They’re worried, and they’re flailing about and this is part of the flailing about,” Hoyer said of the measures.

Hoyer called the effort a “fraud” and “charade,” slamming Republicans for supporting policies over the last year that “have made the budget worse.”

The GOP tax overhaul coupled with the large spending package Congress passed last month are projected to add $2.2 trillion more to the country’s debt by 2027 than was originally forecast in 2017.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., advised Democrats to vote against the budget amendment and recessions package in a letter to rank-and-file members.
