It ‘takes one,’ not a village, says Michelle

Campaigning first lady Michelle Obama has come up with her own catchword to help her husband win reelection: “It takes one.”

Similar in a way to former first lady Hillary Clinton’s “It takes a village” campaign to herald community involvement, Michelle Obama’s effort encourages supporters to reach out and bring others into the Obama support network.

“That’s the only way we’re going to give Barack another four years,” she said about her husband. In an email to supporters, she added:

“‘It Takes One’ is as simple as it sounds. Every time you take action, whether it’s attending an event or registering voters, I’m asking you to take one other person along. Reaching out one person at a time might not seem like much, but consider this — that neighbor you recruit will talk to someone else, who will reach out to yet another person. And your impact grows,” she wrote.

“That could be the difference between waking up on November 7th knowing you did everything you could to re-elect Barack — or asking yourself, ‘Could I have done more?'”

Friend —

Do you remember the first time you got involved in a cause you believed in?

I bet you did it because someone asked you to, or talked to you about an issue close to their heart.

That’s a big part of how I first got involved. Not long after Barack and I got married, the two of us would take a couple of our friends along to collect signatures for his very first campaign for the state legislature. We’d knock on doors, get to know our neighbors, and talk to folks about the issues right on their front steps — or in their living rooms.

It was then that I realized the power that every voter has, not only to make their own voice heard, but to reach out and get their friends and family involved. That’s the only way we’re going to give Barack another four years.

That’s my story — what’s yours? Help launch “It Takes One,” our new effort to inspire even more people to get involved in this campaign. Tell your story: Who first brought you into this movement?

“It Takes One” is as simple as it sounds. Every time you take action, whether it’s attending an event or registering voters, I’m asking you to take one other person along.

Reaching out one person at a time might not seem like much, but consider this — that neighbor you recruit will talk to someone else, who will reach out to yet another person. And your impact grows.

That could be the difference between waking up on November 7th knowing you did everything you could to re-elect Barack — or asking yourself, “Could I have done more?”

Join me — share your story today. Let’s get out there and win this thing one person at a time:
