Respect for the law starts at the top
Re: “Driver’s ed for region’s cops?” March 29
Washington cops have long treated the laws of the District with impunity. Why should the laws of physics be any different?
Cops follow the example set by the mayor and the D.C. Council. Even the use of the governmentspeak “preventable” reflects a lack of leadership. Despite his reluctant apology, Mayor Fenty’s disrespect for the law is not new. D.C. citizens are paying millions for civil rights violations for actions both the mayor and police chief deemed reasonable and proper.
After the head of Metro said that the deaths of 27 people in accidents last year was “regrettable, but these things happen” Metro board member Jim Graham pushed through a performance bonus and a new contract. Great job, Brownie! It’s D.C. citizens who must subsidize these accidents, lawsuits, bad judgment and “preventable” expenses.
Safety and respect for the law start at the top. The only ones who don’t understand this are the officials we elected. District voters are the top. It is therefore our problem to fix, which we must do by electing 100 percent new leadership.

‘Pro-choice libertarian’ is logically impossible
Re: “Liberalism is no longer about freedom,” April 8
John Stossel talks about how most people don’t really understand what libertarianism is, but as evidenced by his April 8 column, he apparently doesn’t know what it is either!
To paraphrase, Stossel basically says you cannot favor limited government and also be against abortion, so he is a pro-choice libertarian. But the terms “pro-choice” and “libertarian” directly contradict each other.
Libertarians, by definition, support maximum liberty. We have God-given rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence, but without the right to life, no other rights can possibly exist. Taking away the right to life also takes away the right to maximum liberty.

Pro-immigrant group should be cut off
CASA of Maryland is now protesting a $338,000 budget cut in Montgomery County. Fact is, CASA does not deserve any public funding at all because it continues to support and encourage illegal Immigration, which is a major problem in Montgomery County as well as a major cause of our economic problems.
It’s a well-known fact that the county’s liberal leadership is supporting CASA to gain votes in November.
CASA of Maryland should be completely cut off. Taxpayer funds should not be wasted on an organization that has continuously encouraged illegal Immigrants to migrate to Montgomery County.
