Battlefield, general store among new Va. landmarks

The Unison Battlefield Historic District in Loudoun and Fauquier counties, where Union and Confederate cavalry fought in November 1862, was among eight sites Virginia added to its landmarks registry.

It was at Unison that President Abraham Lincoln relieved Gen. George B. McClellan of his command after he failed to execute a battle plan drawn up by the president and refused to more aggressively pursue Confederate forces.

Also among the new additions to the state’s landmarks registry is the Freeman House Store and Museum in Vienna, which was built in 1859 and restored to its original likeness in the 1970s.
