McConnell appoints task forces to negotiate ‘at warp speed’ on massive stimulus bill

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he is appointing three GOP Senate groups to write a major coronavirus stimulus bill with the White House.

“We are not leaving town until we have constructed and passed another bill,” McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said. “We will stay here until we reach a bipartisan agreement and at least 60 votes to pass it,” McConnell said.

He added, “We are going to move here in warp speed, for the Senate.”

McConnell made the decision to appoint the three GOP task force groups after Senate Republicans met privately with Steven Mnuchin to discuss a White House plan to inject $1 trillion into the economy, including about $250 billion dedicated to sending cash payments to adults who are financially suffering from the economic damage caused by the virus.

Not many Republicans looked pleased with the massive stimulus plan when they left the meeting, although a group of GOP lawmakers supports it.

McConnell said the three task force groups would come up with a proposal Republicans and the White House can agree to and would then negotiate with Democrats “and see what we can agree to.”

Senate Democrats on Tuesday unveiled their own $750 billion stimulus proposal.
