Elizabeth Warren goes heavy on impeachment at NAACP conference

DETROIT — Many House Democrats and Nancy Pelosi are reluctant to rush to impeaching President Trump for fear of political consequences, but Elizabeth Warren is not holding back with her call to begin impeachment proceedings.

“I understand that there are people with political reasons that say it’s not where we want to be, but my view is some things are above politics,” the Massachusetts senator said at a presidential candidates forum at the 110th annual NAACP conference in Detroit on Tuesday. “The responsibility of the Congress of the United States of America when a president breaks the law is to bring impeachment charges against that president.”

Warren was the first Democratic presidential candidate to call on the House to start impeachment proceedings against Trump following the release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian interference in the 2016 election. On Monday, NAACP leadership unanimously voted in support of the House starting impeachment proceedings against Trump.

“Once the federal government started investigating that attack, now-President Donald Trump did everything he could to obstruct justice,” Warren said.

Warren brushed off concerns that even if the House voted to impeach the president, it is unlikely that the majority-Republican Senate would vote to convict him.

“This is a moment in history, and every single person in Congress should be called on to vote and then have to live with that vote for the rest of their lives,” Warren said.
