Hillary Clinton raised $12 million less than Bernie Sanders during the month of February, during which she raised $30 million and started March with about $31 million on hand.
The Sanders campaign was able to take in over $42 million during the month by capitalizing on online contributions going in to Super Tuesday. The Vermont senator also received a rush of donations earlier in the month after he won the New Hampshire primary by 22 points.
Sanders’ fundraising edge, however, didn’t seem to hurt Clinton too badly, as she has won 11 of the 14 Democratic primaries so far. Clinton’s campaign emphasized that its average donation for the month was less than $50, and that more than half of the donations came from online grassroots solicitations.
This focus on small, grassroots fundraising mimics the strategy implemented by Sanders’ campaign that led him to early success.
“We continue to beat every fundraising goal and, more importantly, make smart and efficient investments,” said Hillary for America Campaign Manager Robby Mook. “Grassroots support is truly powering this campaign as the majority of our fundraising came from online donations.”
