Steve Scalise thanks world leaders, but not Trump, in emotional return to House

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise thanked a number of world leaders during his emotional return to the Capitol Thursday, but President Trump was not among them.

Scalise spent time to thank Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, British Prime Minister Theresa May, and Jordan’s King Abdullah in his remarks before the House. He also thanked colleagues from both sides of the aisle, people in the public who donated blood, and the Capitol Police officers in his security detail who returned fire at the shooter during the June incident in Alexandria, Va.

But, Trump’s name was not mentioned.

Trump said he visited Scalise in the hospital in the days after the shooting and spent time with his family. He said the shooting would bring unity to the country.

“I reassured them that the entire country is pulling for them, praying for them, and that we are here for them every single step of the way,” Trump said on June 15.

“America’s hearts, and we mean this in the truest sense, sends its love. There are a lot of parts in this country, great hearts and they’re all sending their love and support to the speech anyone family. And Steve, in his own way, may have brought some unity to our long-divided country.”
