Recently we found out that many homeowners in the area still spend more than one-third of their total incomes on housing costs. According to U.S. Census data, 36 percent of Marylanders spend 30 percent or more of their income on paying housing bills.
But now that the Census Bureau has released its updated American Community Survey findings, we can dig a little deeper. Please note that some of the margins of error on these are pretty wide as these are not the official 2010 Census numbers. But according to the survey, here are the communities in our area — all of them in Prince George’s County — that are paying for their housing through the nose:
| Town | Percent of homeowners spending 30% or more on housing |
| Langley Park | 66% |
| Bladensburg | 56% |
| Forestville | 56% |
| Temple Hills | 55% |
| Hyattsville |
54% |
Two Montgomery County towns have among the lowest percentages on this list. In Glen Echo, 16 percent of homeowners pay at least 30 percent on housing. In Brookeville, the figure is 17 percent.
