Clinton defends against Trump attack on her support for veterans

Hillary Clinton disputed Donald Trump’s claim that she had done “nothing” for veterans, countering that it is Trump, in fact, who hasn’t supported them.

“Well, I, of course, have given money to veterans charity charities,” Clinton said during a CNN interview on, referencing the accusations that Trump did not give money to veterans organizations as he promised.

From 2009-14 Clinton gave $70,000 to veteran’s groups, which critics point out is about half of what she would make from a single paid speech. The former secretary of state emphasized her policy work to help veterans groups, explaining that over the course of her life she has “worked to provide hundreds of, you know, millions of dollars over time to help our veterans by what I voted for, what I’ve worked for.”

Trump has no such record, Clinton claimed. On Tuesday Trump lashed out at the press for questioning whether he donated the $1 million in personal gifts to veterans’ charities.

“Well, I think the problem here is the difference between what Donald Trump says and what Donald Trump does,” Clinton said on MSNBC during an interview only minutes later. “You know, he’s bragged for months about raising $6 million for veterans and donating a million dollars himself. But it took a reporter to shame him into actually making his contribution and getting money to veterans groups.”
