Canadian police move to disband trucker convoy at Ambassador Bridge

Canadian police have begun to disband the trucker convoy on the Ambassador Bridge that connects Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, acting on a judge’s order to open the trade route.

Windsor police announced Saturday morning that they were commencing enforcement of the judge’s Friday ruling. They came to the bridge around 8:45 a.m., and many vehicles left when directed to do so, according to ABC News. About three large trucks remained, and the protesters who stayed were singing “O Canada,” the country’s national anthem, as of about 9:30 a.m.

The Ambassador Bridge protest is the first of the nationwide protests to be broken up by law enforcement. The city of Windsor and the Automotive Parts Manufacturer’s Association sought the injunction against the occupation of the bridge, which began Monday, citing a loss of business and the inability to transfer car parts to and from Detroit.

The protesters were part of the “Freedom Trucker Convoy” demanding change to Canada’s strict COVID-19 restrictions, including extensive vaccine mandates, lockdown threats, and masking. The weekslong demonstration included the occupation of Canada’s capital, Ottawa, and rallies around the country, including blocking trade routes to the U.S. states of Michigan, North Dakota, and Montana.
