Man sentenced to 20 years in crash that killed a nun

A 24-year-old illegal immigrant was sentenced to 20 years for the drunken-driving crash that killed one nun and injured two others in Prince William County. Carlos A. Martinelly Montano, of Bolivia, was found guilty in October of felony murder. He pleaded guilty to two counts of maiming resulting from driving while intoxicated, driving on a revoked license, involuntary manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.

He was facing up to 70 years. Prince William County Circuit Court Judge Lon Farris said he lowered the initial sentence after Martinelly Montano read the statement professing his remorse.

Martinelly Montano was charged in the Aug. 1, 2010, crash that left Sister Denise Mosier, 66, dead. Two other Benedictine nuns were seriously injured in the head-on crash, which sparked outcry over the Department of Homeland Security’s deportation proceedings.
