Former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates isn’t ruling out a political future, yet whatever future she has won’t involve running to be Georgia’s next governor.
Despite an eager push from Georgia Democrats for Yates to succeed Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, who is term-limited, she said she is not interested in the job.
“I am totally ruling out the governor’s race. I am not running for governor,” Yates told the New Yorker.
Yates recognizes her firing over her refusal to enforce President Trump’s travel ban, which thrust her into the national spotlight, has given her a unique platform. And it’s a platform she said she is determining how to responsibly use.
“I recognize that I may have a voice that I didn’t have before. And part of what I want to be able to do is to figure out how I can responsibly use that voice in a way to impact things that I think really matter. I just don’t know what form that takes,” Yates said.
She has been in the spotlight recently for suggesting former national security adviser Mike Flynn may have been the target of blackmail by Russia and that she had warned the Trump administration against hiring him.
As Yates enjoys her hero status from Democrats for standing up to Trump, she said she is looking for ways to give back.
“I’ve got to give something more back,” she added.
