First lady starts doing first lady duty, visiting children in hospitals

First lady Melania Trump spent Thursday morning reading to children at a hospital in upper Manhattan, less than 24 hours after she paid a similar visit to a pediatric facility in Washington.

Trump, who has kept a relatively low profile since her husband was sworn in, arrived at York Presbyterian Hospital near the Columbia University campus around 11 a.m. with a box of Dr. Seuss books in tow. A White House official said she will read stories to children in the pediatric unit and speak with their parents.

The first lady’s hospital visits comes on the heels of her husband’s first address to a joint session of Congress, during which he promised Americans that Obamacare’s repeal is imminent and vowed to put forth a new plan that ensures universal access to health care coverage. Melania Trump sat with 18-year-old Children’s National Health System patient Jessica Gregory during the speech.

Trump is expected to focus on cyberbullying and women’s issues once she relocates to the White House this summer with the couple’s 10-year-old son, Barron.
