Thirteen children were taken to area hospitals after a school bus and dump truck collided Tuesday morning, according to Montgomery County Police.
None of the children on the bus was seriously injured in the crash, but all were taken to area hospitals for precautionary evaluations, said police spokeswoman Lucille Baur. Four of the students were treated for minor injuries. Their bus had been heading to Parkland Middle School in Rockville.
The dump truck driver, a 58-year-old Queenstown man, was charged with failing to stop at stop signal, Baur said.
The accident happened at about 8 a.m. in the Wheaton Woods-Aspen Hill area. The dump truck was traveling on Viers Mill Road and failed to stop at the traffic signal and clipped the school bus, which was making a left turn, Baur said. Both vehicles ended up on the sidewalk at Robindale Drive.
The dump trick driver was taken to a nearby hospital with chest pains and released, Baur said. Police would not release the name of the dump truck driver Tuesday afternoon because they had not been able to confirm his identity, Baur said.
Montgomery County and Maryland state police were still investigating the crash Tuesday afternoon.
