AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — One person was killed when a twin-engine plane crashed as it attempted to land at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says the Piper Aerostar aircraft went down Wednesday afternoon north of the airport.

Authorities say the privately owned plane crashed in a field, igniting a three-acre brush fire that drew a broad response from emergency personnel. Authorities say only the pilot was on board and that he gave no signs of distress before the crash.

FAA records list a Dallas man as the owner of the plane. Austin police did not identify the man Wednesday afternoon.

An airport spokesman says flights at Austin-Bergstrom were not affected by the wreck.
