Here’s why you get that spam

A Rochester, N.Y., woman admitted that she borrowed about $12,000 from her employer, but said she was going to pay it back once the senders of a Nigerian e-mail gave her $10 million as promised.

Jalaine Noella Holtan, 53, told police she had been investing with the Nigerians for several years, and sent over $12,507 in the company’s money to them since July 7. Holtan said she got an e-mail in early July from a lawyer named Morgan Smith, who said Holtan is to receive $10 million from investments she had made in diamonds and oil.

She told police that the diplomats from Nigeria had the $10 million in June, but they needed a “certificate” to transfer the money to her. The diplomats asked her to front the money to them to pay for the certificate. Holtan still was waiting for the $10 million when police arrested her.

Real Connecticut vs. fake Connecticut

A Connecticut man pretending to be a police officer picked the wrong person to pull over.

Police say 20-year-old Israel Gomez turned on flashing lights and used a siren and loudspeaker to coax Ronald Blair off the road. Blair, a real lieutenant with the Hartford police department, called for real backups, and the real officers arrested Gomez and his 20-year-old sidekick, Esteban Cardona.
