Australian school makes boys apologize for gender and sexual assaults they didn’t commit

An Australian school made its boys apologize to its girls on behalf of their gender.

Male students at Brauer College in Warrnambool, Australia, were told to apologize for sexual assault during a school assembly on March 24. Many parents were reportedly upset that the activity took place.

Danielle Shephard said her 12-year-old son felt confused after he gave the apology.

“He said that he was made to stand up and basically apologize. … It wasn’t explained properly to the male students what they were doing or why they were doing it,” she said, noting that parents were not warned of the exercise ahead of time.

Another parent, Nicole Daniels, told the Daily Mail that the school had “completely messed it up.”

“What they’ve made the boys do, they’ve labeled and categorized them into the same category as a perpetrator and a rapist when these boys have done nothing wrong,” she said.

The school principal, Jane Boyle, said the apology was “inappropriate” but acknowledged that it was “well-intended.”

“Schools play an important role in the promotion of safety and respect of all students, and discussions in schools around respect towards girls and women are a key part of this vital work,” she said in a statement. “This week, at a whole school assembly, Brauer College discussed the topic of respect for woman and the importance of bystander behaviour and speaking up to report incidents of inappropriate behaviour.”
