The Bernie Sanders campaign released a new ad featuring a surfing Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, just ahead of Saturday’s caucuses.
The ad, titled “The Cost of War,” features the congresswoman and combat veteran speaking about Sanders’ commitment to anti-war policies.
“I could not in good conscience stay back here in beautiful Hawaii and watch my brothers and sisters in uniform go off into combat,” says Gabbard, who stepped down as DNC vice chair to support Sanders.
Gabbard cites Sanders’ vote against the Iraq War and says he truly “understands the cost of war.”
She adds, “The cost is continued once our veterans come home. Bernie Sanders will defend our country and take the trillions of dollars spent on these interventionist, regime change, unnecessary wars and invest in here at home.”
Although she is not directly mentioned, Sanders’ opponent Hillary Clinton voted for the Iraq War and both sponsored and proposed U.S. military interventions and regime changes as secretary of state.
As Hawaiians head to their caucus sites on Saturday, Sanders has said he hopes to win the majority of the 34 state delegates. Although not much polling has been done, pundits predict Saturday’s contests in Hawaii, Alaska and Washington state should be favorable towards Sanders.
“The American people are not looking to settle for inches there looking for real change,” Gabbard says in the ad. “What I saw in Bernie Sanders was a heart of ‘aloha.’ No matter who you are or where you come from in this country, we are in this together.”
