McConnell re-elected as Senate majority leader

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was re-elected to the top leadership post unanimously Wednesday morning by Republican lawmakers in a closed-door meeting in the Capitol.

This will be McConnell’s second term as majority leader.

McConnell’s victory came after Republicans successfully defended all but two of 24 seats up for re-election, and unexpectedly was able to maintain majority control.

The rest of McConnell’s GOP leadership team is also expected to easily retain their posts, including Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas, Conference Chairman John Thune of Texas, Republican Policy Committee Chair John Barrasso of Wyoming and Conference Vice Chair Roy Blunt of Missouri.

After the Nov. 8 election, Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., easily secured the chairmanship of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., is expected to serve on the NRSC in a top position with him.
