There’s still no money, but there are small signs that D.C. isn’t ready to allow D.C. United to act on its threats to relocate to Baltimore. On Tuesday, D.C. City Council member Tommy Wells, D-Ward 6, introduced a proposed resolution stating the D.C. government “should take active steps to create strategies and solutions that keep D.C. United as a professional soccer team located within the District of Columbia.”
Council members Jack Evans, D-Ward 2, and Mary Cheh, D-Ward 3, both used Twitter to express their support for the resolution. It was also backed by Jim Graham, D-Ward?1, according to the Twitter account of Keep D.C. United, a fan group devoted to having the club stay in D.C.
Of course, the resolution doesn’t actually commit the city to anything specific, but it does gauge the council’s current temperament.
D.C. United has met recently with D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, who has steadfastly maintained that there are no city funds for a soccer stadium, and it continues to work with Events DC to renegotiate its lease at RFK Stadium.
