Woman believed to be oldest person ever dies at age 124

A woman in the Philippines believed to be the world’s oldest person died at 124 years old on Monday.

Francisca Susano, known as Lola Iska, was found dead in her home in Kabankalan, Philippines. Born on Sept. 11, 1897, she was two years older than the official record-holder for the world’s oldest person. Guinness World Records was still examining documents needed for her to be declared the world’s oldest person before her death, according to the U.S. Sun.

“Mayor Pedro Zayco, Vice Mayor Raul Rivera and all city officials as well as all the people of Kabankalan City condoles and prays with the family of Lola Iska in their period of bereavement,” the City Government of Kabankalan wrote on Facebook. “Lola Iska will always remain as our inspiration and pride.”

The secret to Susano’s long life is believed to include a diet mainly consisting of vegetables and a little meat, with no pork. She also credited not drinking alcohol with contributing to her longevity, the outlet reported.

The cause of Lola’s death has not yet been determined. She will be tested for COVID-19, even though it is not believed she had any symptoms, the report added.

The record-holder for oldest person ever is Jeanne Louise Calment from Arles, France. She was 122 years old when she died on Aug. 4, 1997, according to Guinness World Records.
