Ahead of St. Paddy’s day, McDonnell meets with Irish PM

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell was a busy guy Wednesday. In addition to a lunch with a group of national reporters and an afternoon meeting with the state’s congressional delegation, he also carved out some time to meet with Enda Kenny, the new Prime Minister of Ireland.

The two chatted about economic development and trade between the Old Dominion and the Old Country; McDonnell noted that Ireland is one of the top recipients of agricultural exports from Virginia, jumping from 16th in 2009 to 10th in 2010.

Ireland was 23rd in total imports from Virginia in 2009, with nearly $150 million in goods shipped across the pond from the Old Dominion.

“As this Administration continues to place a greater emphasis on the export of Virginia’s goods and products around the world, Ireland will remain an extremely important trading partner,” McDonnell said.

Kenny is set to join President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and House Speaker John Boehner for a St. Patrick’s Day luncheon Thursday.
